Hi guys. Today I saw an air show in Rhode Island. While watching an F-18 fly around at 700 miles per hour, I noticed a strange sound. It kinda sounded like an earsplitting ripping noise. It happened every time they did a high-speed pass. Have any of you guys been to an air show and seen a jet do this? If so, do you know what it is and how it happens? Please tell me.

    Thanks.

When something goes above the speed of sound, it is basically building up the sound constantly because it is adding to the sound it made before because it is going faster than the sound itself. It's a Sonic boom.

The boom you hear, and the 'thunder' and/or wave sounding effect during and after is a mix of air and the loud engine itself.

In short, you're hearing air being pushed around by a hunk of metal and glass moving faster than the speed of sound.

I really wish that one day...

I would have the stomach of steel needed to be able to flip around like they do in airshows.

But until then, I'll just have to probably still use my feet to get from A to B.

Even if you don't have a license and you're flying an aircraft, you are a "pilot", however if you are licensed to fly, then you are a "licensed pilot". As there are sub-sections of pilot types, there are various pilot licenses (Private Pilot License, Commercial Pilot License, Airline Transport Pilot License, Glider Pilot License, Sport Pilot License, etc.) as well as additional licenses (Certified Flight Instructor, Master Pilot License, etc.).

I find it would make more sense if the Master Pilot License had it set up so it would be based off the Wright Brothers for commercial pilots, then one based off Alexander Graham Bell for the non-profit or private pilots... Especially since Alexander flew his first aircraft before the Wright Brothers (He does it publicly), then the Wright Brothers flew (Privately and later crashed... killing a pilot that was also helping Alexander...) before they both had their final aircrafts near the same time. I can personally deny the saying that "The Wright Brothers are the father of flight", since they are not, not even Alexander or anyone who built aircrafts.. since we had birds, bug, dinosaurs and so before us that could/can fly.
