    Look at all of the people who 'pioneered' socialism. They never came from upper classes, and even middle class socialists are not too common. Karl Marx's family was poor, as was Lenin, and the majority of the nations that Communism/socialism took root in. Its never really worked in America or other Western nations since America for the most part is very prosperous.

    I think most Western nations were influenced by the Enlightenment in one way or the other. I personally dislike some of the Enlightenment ideas because they think man can become a godlike figure. Humanity is flawed, so I disagree with man ever overcoming issues like racism, war, sexism, etc etc.

    Personally, I believe that socialism's only purpose is to overthrow a bad government so that it can be replaced with a better one after the socialism fails.
